Treatment of Whiplash & Associated Problems

Treatment of whiplash associated disorders can be very difficult, owing to the many and varied structures which may be damaged during such a forceful accident. Whiplash often becomes chronic (symptoms lasting longer than 6 months), however, given the correct treatment, most sufferers should gain significant relief from their symptoms.

As with treatment for any region of the body, the primary causes of dysfunction must be determined. Often in whiplash there will be a combination of factors, including the use of a soft collar in the first few days following injury. Other forms of treatment may include the following:

  • Neck Muscle Strengthening
  • Mobilising (via exercises or manual therapy)
  • Postural re-education and exercises
  • Massage
  • Manipulation
  • Traction
  • Stretching (muscles and nerves)
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Medications
  • Surgery
  • Dry Needling
  • Pilates

Evidence-Based Medicine

Treatment at the Melbourne Whiplash Centre relies upon an evidence-based approach to facilitate rehabilitation. The trend in the literature is to provide active, functional rehabilitation for chronic neck pain sufferers.

Once again, the method of treatment chosen will depend upon the areas of dysfunction.

Treatment at the Melbourne Whiplash Centre

A common finding in all chronic neck pain sufferers is a weak/dysfunctional neck. As mentioned, ongoing pain will affect movement patterns and ultimately lifestyle - "use it or lose it!".

The Whiplash Centres are a universal group of qualified practitioners who have dedicated their clinics to the assessment and treatment of chronic neck pain.

The Whiplash Centres utilise state-of-the-art computerised technology called the Multi-Cervical Unit. The Multi-Cervical Unit was designed in Toronto, Canada and is now distributed world-wide from Denver, Colorado by BTE Technologies.

The protocol for assessment and treatment of neck dysfunction was devised by the staff at the Melbourne Whiplash Centre. The "Melbourne Protocol" has been scientifically proven to be reliable. Research has also shown that it is a valid means of strengthening the neck whilst reducing pain and improving lifestyle and function.

There are a number of Whiplash Centres around the world which focus upon helping whiplash sufferers overcome their symptoms. The International Whiplash Centres use the Multi-Cervical Unit to objectively examine the strength and mobility of the cervical spine. This information is then used to formulate an individualised treatment plan. These Centres have been demonstrating excellent outcomes, helping those who have suffered from whiplash associated disorder for many years.
