About Us

The Melbourne Whiplash Centre was the first Centre in Australia to use the Multi-Cervical Unit - an advanced, computerised, & objective technology for defining and treating chronic neck pain.

The treatment provided at the the Melbourne Whiplash Centre is supported by an increasing volume of research indicating that exercise prescription gains best results for whiplash and chronic neck pain suffers. The Melbourne Whiplash Centre incorporates proven manual therapy techniques with a tailored rehabilitation programme directed at strengthening areas of the neck and shoulders weakened by disuse atrophy.

Initial Assesment

The Initial Assessment is conducted by a qualified whiplash therapist. Firstly we discuss how your problem came about, and how it has affected your life. We then need to know about the things that you would like to be able to do if it wasn't for your neck. Finally there is an Objective Assessment using the to measure the true mobility and strength of your neck.

The values you demonstrate will then be compared to values expected of a healthy individual. If a deficit is found, then a program is designed to rectify the problem. The rehabilitation program is based upon performing strength and conditioning exercises isolated to the neck. This is different to general body rehabilitation work such as gym workouts or hydrotherapy in that they target and isolate the muscles which control the neck.

Most programs will involve 18 treatment sessions, consisting of individually prescribed exercises. After every 9 sessions, an objective re-assessment will be performed. This is similar to the initial assessment, and will give a clear picture of your progress over time. The re-assessments allows for adjustments to your program as your strength and endurance improves.

The aim of the program is simple - to rectify any deficits identified in the Initial Assessment. Once these areas have improved to a “normal” level (what would be expected of a healthy neck) you will be discharged, perhaps with some home exercises to maintain your mobility and strength.

The key to the program is the proven objective measures of your neck function. This helps to define major goals, and when we perform a re-assessment your progress can be clearly monitored. You and your Doctor will receive detailed, computer- generated reports at every assessment, clearly showing problem areas and progress.

Why Does it Work?

We combine basic rehabilitation principles with new medical technology - this is why our methods work. Each program is individually tailored, and involves supervised strength and rehabilitation exercises.
